Description
Toucan Subspecies and Taxonomy: The Keel-Billed Toucan Complex
Once classified as separate species, the three main subspecies of the channel-billed and keel-billed toucan group are now recognized as one interbreeding complex. Along with the citron-throated toucan, they hybridize freely wherever their ranges overlap, which is the main reason taxonomists merged them.
How Closely Related Are the Subspecies?
Not all subspecies are equally close. Ramphastos vitellinus ariel is genetically nearer to R. v. culminatus than to the nominate form, and some ornithologists already treat the two as near-distinct species. Under naming priority rules, ariel was described first. If the groups were officially split, they would become Ramphastos ariel ariel and R. a. culminatus.
A Possible New Toucan Species in Eastern Brazil
An isolated population lives in eastern Brazil. It looks almost identical to R. v. ariel and has traditionally been grouped with it. However, molecular analysis (Weckstein, 2005) suggests it has been genetically isolated for a long time. It may be an undescribed subspecies, or even a separate species.
What Do Toucans Eat and How Do They Forage?
Toucans are canopy foragers. They have short wings and rarely fly long distances, so they search for food by hopping between branches and taking short flap-and-glide flights from tree to tree.
How Toucans Use Their Bills to Feed
- Reaching fruit: The long bill works like tongs or chopsticks, snipping ripe fruit from the tips of thin branches that heavier animals can’t reach.
- Eating technique: A toucan tosses the food into the air, catches it, and swallows it whole.
- Raiding nests: The bill’s long reach lets toucans take eggs and chicks from tree cavities and other birds’ nests.
- Varied diet: Besides fruit, toucans eat insects, frogs, and small reptiles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can different toucan subspecies interbreed?
Yes. The subspecies in this complex, and the citron-throated toucan, interbreed freely where their ranges meet.
Why don’t toucans fly long distances?
Their wings are short, so they make short flap-and-glide hops through the forest canopy instead of long flights.
What do toucans eat?
Mostly ripe fruit, plus insects, frogs, small reptiles, and the eggs and chicks of other birds.
How does a toucan swallow food?
It grips the food in its bill, tosses it into the air, catches it, and swallows it whole.
