Male vs. female: The sexes look alike. The one difference is the bill, which is shorter on the female.
Bill: The bill is mostly green to green-yellow. Look for a vertical black line at the base, red and ivory “teeth” along the cutting edges (tomia), and green striations on the upper mandible.

Where Does the Red-Breasted Toucan Live? Seasonal Movements
In the southern part of its range, the red-breasted toucan moves to lower elevations during the austral winter. After breeding, some birds leave natural forest and shift into plantations.
What Does the Red-Breasted Toucan Eat?
This toucan is mainly a fruit eater (frugivore). Its diet includes:
- Fruits from native and introduced plants
- Green coffee beans and fruit from orchards
- Insects (to a lesser extent)
- Small birds (to a lesser extent)
Foraging behavior: It usually feeds in pairs or small groups, though gatherings of 20 or more sometimes occur. Most foraging happens in the forest canopy, but it will pick up fallen fruit from the ground.
Red-Breasted Toucan Breeding & Nesting Behavior
Breeding season:
- Southern range: October to February
- Northern range: January to June
Courtship and territory: Pairs defend territories. Males allopreen (groom) their mates and courtship-feed females.
Nest sites: These toucans nest in tree cavities, in both living and dead trees. The cavities form through natural decay or are excavated by woodpeckers. The birds will enlarge the entrance hole and the cavity if needed. The cavity floor is typically lined with a layer of regurgitated seeds. Nests studied so far sat 0.7 to 6.0 m (2 to 20 ft) above the ground.
Eggs and chicks:
- Clutch: 2-4 eggs
- Incubation: both parents share duty for about 16-19 days
- Feeding: both parents provision the nestlings
- Fledging: 40-50 days after hatching
